Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental cockroach is also known as the waterbug or black cockroaches or black beetle cockroach. Oriental cockroaches have smooth, shiny and dark bodies. They are among the largest of the house-infesting cockroaches in Toronto, Ontario.

The Habitat of Oriental Cockroach:

The oriental cockroach adult males ranges 18–29 mm and adult females being ranges 20–27 mm. It is dark brown or black in color and has a glossy body. The female has a somewhat different appearance from the male. The female has non-functional wings just below her head.

Oriental cockroaches are often found in sewers and basements, particularly around pipes and drains. Oriental cockroach problems are common in little Portugal area of Toronto due to older sewer infrastructure.

The Threats posed by Oriental Cockroach:

Oriental roaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces. Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air. Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. Oriental roaches were even shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.

Social Behavior:

Cockroaches in general produce odorous secretions from various points in their bodies. Such secretions can affect the flavors of various foods. When cockroach populations are high, these secretions may result in a characteristic odor in the general region of the infestation. Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses have been found in their bodies.

We suggest a commercially registered insecticide Bait application to exterminate Oriental Cockroaches.

Bait: It is a very palatable substance placed strategically so that the Oriental Cockroaches may find it easily during the foraging activities. These pesticides are commercially registered with the ministry of the environment, and can only be deployed by a licensed exterminator. Once Oriental Cockroaches ingests the deployed substance as a meal, it is considered to have had a lethal dose.

The bait is not instantly lethal to the Oriental Cockroaches. The advantage is that the bait will reach into Oriental Cockroaches nesting areas and will affect all Oriental Cockroaches. Oriental Cockroaches  would likely die off in the nesting areas and not in our living spaces. Since most baits are formulated such that they do not cause any immediate discomfort to the Oriental Cockroaches ; they are likely to have multiple feedings and encourage other members to feed as well.

Expected Results:

When the Oriental Cockroaches finds the Bait during normal foraging activities and ingests it as desirable food, then Oriental Cockroaches is considered to have had a lethal dose. The Oriental Cockroaches expire after some time having been affected by the presence of the active ingredient of the Bait in the Oriental Cockroaches’s physiology. The Oriental Cockroaches gets sick and dies off. The body debris of dead Oriental Cockroaches acts as secondary source of poisoning for the remainder population of Oriental Cockroaches. Thus the pest’s nesting environment is also turned into a terminal trap.
